Alternative Air Conditioning Technologies: Underfloor Air Distribution (UFAD): Technology Focus

چکیده

Introduction and Background Recent trends in today’s office environment make it increasingly more difficult for conventional centralized HVAC systems to satisfy the environmental preferences of individual office workers using the standardized approach of providing a single uniform thermal and ventilation environment. Since its original introduction in West Germany during the 1950s, the open plan office containing modular workstation furniture and partitions is now the norm. Thermostatically controlled zones in open plan offices typically encompass relatively large numbers of workstations in which a diverse work population having a wide range of preferred temperatures must be accommodated. Modern office buildings are also being impacted by a large influx of heatgenerating equipment (computers, printers, etc.) whose loads may vary considerably from workstation to workstation. Offices are often reconfigured during the building’s lifetime to respond to changing tenant needs, affecting the distribution of within-space loads and the ventilation pathways among and over office partitions. Compounding this problem, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of the comfort, health, and productivity of individual office workers, giving rise to an increased demand among employers and employees for a high-quality work environment.

Air distribution effectiveness with stratified air distribution systems

Stratified air distribution systems such as Traditional Displacement Ventilation (TDV) and UnderFloor Air Distribution (UFAD) systems have been known to provide better indoor air quality. This study examined the influence of several key design parameters on air distribution effectiveness by using a validated CFD program. The parameters studied were space type, diffuser number, supply air temper...

Experimental Measurements and Numerical Simulations of Particle Transport and Distribution in Ventilated Rooms

Prediction of particle dispersion and distribution in a room is very important for creating and maintaining a healthy indoor environment. The present study used a CFD program with a Lagrangian particle tracking method to predict particle dispersion and concentration distribution in ventilated rooms. Since the Lagrangian method could generate great uncertainty in particle concentration calculati...

Robust controlled invariance for monotone systems: Application to ventilation regulation in buildings

The robust controlled invariance describes the ability to maintain, using suitable control actions, the state of a system in a set for any value of the disturbances. By considering a class of monotone systems and a multidimensional interval as target set, we obtain a simple characterization of the robust controlled invariance. We then give a method to stabilize the state into a robust controlle...

A Hybrid Model and MIMO Control for Intelligent Buildings Temperature Regulation over WSN

The aim of this paper is to propose a model-based feedback control strategy for indoor temperature regulation in buildings equipped with underfloor air distribution (UFAD). Supposing distributed sensing and actuation capabilities, a 0−D model of the ventilation process is first derived, based on the thermodynamics properties of the flow. A state-space description of the process is then inferred...
